Horror stories are common in Tenebrisian culture, a building block for Noxferrum’s legends. And to them, one of the scariest stories is about how the Aruna Ruins came to be. In the story, an entity known as Arun-Duaht, is rumored to be resting inside those ruins, waiting to be unearthed. Whatever twisted, malevolent things that seem to be happening there, are presumably caused by the existence of this so-called Bane of the Arunas.

Historical records and legends whispered tales of how Arun-Duaht could be an aspect of The Forgotten Ones, beings that exist outside spacetime continuum to spread entropy and decay across the whole universe. Some people however, believe that Arun-Duaht is a soulmonger, a being of immense power to drain life and collect souls of the dead, with spectral tethers that would latch onto the living to suck their life force and souls. Meanwhile, the markings on its body serve as protective sigils known as the elder signs, and can temporarily absorb any harmful energy for a short period of time.

Arun-Duaht is commonly attributed in the downfall of the Aruna civilization and the disappearance of its people when they tried to summon it to fight their wars. How it ended up destroying them remains a mystery that Tenebrisians pray never to repeat. As Tenebrisian scholars found an ancient tome with a detailed instruction to summon Arun-Duaht in Aruna Ruins, they brought and preserved it in Nox’rum. Unfortunately, it has recently been stolen, and the possibility of this tome falling into the wrong hands is something that scholars and sages would dread.

Anyone who dares to visit can still feel the lingering presence of Arun-Duaht, in and around the Aruna Ruins. “Shadows” cast and imprinted on the floors, grounds, and walls of these ruins are said to be traces of the ancient Aruna people, and they are seldom alone. Ghastly apparitions can sometimes appear in the ruins, echoes of those whose souls were taken by Arun-Duaht, reliving their final moments before they cease to exist.
